Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical process that can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of your case. The amount of time it takes will depend on whether your wisdom teeth have erupted and how much bone needs to be removed for their extraction. In some cases, all four teeth can be removed in one visit.
How Many Appointments are Required for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Most patients only require one visit to the dentist to have their wisdom teeth removed. The dentist will sedate the patient, extract the teeth, then place gauze and sutures to close the tooth sockets. If a patient has an especially complicated case, multiple appointments may be necessary for treatment.
Can You Go Back to Work or School On The Same Day?
It recommended that you rest after your wisdom teeth removal surgery. After the numbing agent wears off, your mouth will be sore from the wisdom tooth extraction surgery.
You will also be sedated during the procedure and will last for several hours after you have woken up from your surgery. You are required to bring somebody with you to drive you home after your surgery because you will not be able to drive yourself. For this reason, it is not recommended to attempt to go back to work or school on the same day.
Although some people do return to work or school a few days after wisdom teeth removal surgery, you should plan your recovery time depending on how quickly you heal. Depending on the extent and complexity of the procedure, healing times may vary
How Long Does the Procedure Itself Take?
The wisdom tooth removal procedure will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours from the time you arrive at the dentist to the time you are ready to leave. The Dentist has to sedate the patient and prepare all the tools necessary for the wisdom tooth extraction.
This entire process can take a bit of time as the dentist will need to work on each tooth individually. Once the teeth have been extracted, the dentist will then stitch up any wound and make sure that everything is healing properly.
How Long Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Take Per Tooth?
The amount of time your wisdom teeth removal surgery will take per tooth depends on the position which the tooth is located. If a wisdom tooth is impacted, this means that the dentist has to gain access to the tooth before he is able to remove it by going through the gum tissue. This can take more time than other wisdom teeth removal operations.
However, if a wisdom tooth is not impacted and is partially erupted, this will make the removal process much simpler for the dentist and allow them to complete the procedure in less time. Typically, it takes around 10 minutes for each individual tooth to be extracted.
