What Type of Dentures Do You Need?

There are a few different types of dentures that are available, and the best type for you will depend on your individual needs.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are used when all of the teeth in either the upper or lower jaw (or both) need to be replaced. Full dentures fit snugly over the gums, and are held in place by suction or a small amount of adhesive.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain, and are designed to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. Partial dentures attach to existing teeth with clasps or precision attachments.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures, sometimes called permanent dentures, are a type of full denture that is supported by implants, rather than suction or adhesive. Implant-supported dentures are usually only an option for patients who have enough bone density to support the implants.

What to Expect During the Dentures Procedure

The first step in getting dentures is to consult with a dentist to see if dentures are the right solution for your needs. If dentures are right for you, the next step is to have impressions (molds) and measurements taken of your teeth and gums. These impressions will be used to create a model of your mouth, which will be used to create your dentures and help them fit properly so they do not become loose.

Once your dentures are ready, you will return to the dentist to have them fitted. It may take a few adjustments to get the fit just right, but once your dentures are in place, you should be able to eat and speak as normal.

Caring for Your Dentures

It is important to take good care of your dentures so that they last as long as possible. Be sure to brush your dentures daily, and soak them in a denture cleanser overnight. It is also important to visit the dentist regularly to have your dentures checked and cleaned.

Dentures can last for many years with proper care, but they will eventually need to be replaced. When this time comes, consult with your dentist to see if you are a good candidate for implant-supported dentures.
